Mary Anne Brooks was the third of fourteen children and the oldest daughter
of Jerry and Eliza Clark Brooks of Crowder Mountain, North Carolina. Jerry was the
oldest child of free African-American Sarah Brooks (c1787-c1842) . Mary Anne married
Mason Ashe (1827-1908) who was descended from household slaves of Governor Samuel
Ashe of North Carolina. Mason and Mary Anne settled in Ironton, NC where they lived
and died. They are buried in the Poplar Springs AME Zion Church cemetery. Son Pinkney
migrated to the Virginia area south of Richmond with his second family after the
turn of the century. Pinkney’s son Arthur was born in South Hill in 1920and grandson
Arthur, Jr was born in Richmond in 1943. During her lifetime, my grandmother, Lily
Mae Brooks Whitworth, often said she thought we were related to the Wimbledon champion.
Well after her death in 1986, I began family research and quickly realized that,
once again, Mama Lily’s folklore had hit its mark perfectly.
I would really like for Ashe descendents to contact me. I am looking for
photos of the tennis star’s ancestors and descendents to enhance this website and
this page n particular. Please contact me by clicking on the e-mail icon below.
