Lucy Addison was eleven
years old on the date the 1870 census was taken, according to
information given the canvasser. If correct, she would have been
born in 1858 assuming a December 8 birthday as indicated in her 1937
obituary. ( Her obituary placed her birth year as 1861). She was the
2nd oldest of 4 children living with Charles Addison, 64, and Bettie
Addison, 36. Neither adult could read or write, but apparently Lucy and her
older brother, Charles, 13 could both read and write. Sister Ida, 3, and
brother John, 2, were also listed. Mary Green, 17, lived in the
home, but it is not clear if she was family or a boarder. This was
five years after slavery ended. The Addisons were farmers who owned their
home valued at $600 and had personal property, presumably farm animals,
equipment and/or housewares also valued at $600. Due to the age differences
in the adults, it is possible that Charles could be either Bettie's
husband or father-in-law. Since family relationships were not
recorded in 1870, there is no way to be certain. Scott Township is
situated about 10 miles north of Warrenton, Va and about 15 miles west
of Manassas, Va. (In other words, it is near present-day Interstate 66,
about 35 miles west of the Washington, DC beltway.) |
